Monica J. Allen

Vice Chancellor and General Counsel

Ms. Allen was appointed Vice Chancellor and General Counsel in July 2016.  She joined Washington University in 2006 as Senior Counsel.  In 2008, she was named Associate Vice Chancellor, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Litigation Counsel and, for six months in 2014, served as Acting General Counsel.  Prior to 2006, Ms. Allen was a partner at Haar & Woods, LLP, where she specialized in complex litigation, handling a wide variety of professional liability claims and business and commercial disputes.  Ms. Allen has also served as Senior Attorney at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and was an associate at Shands, Elbert, Gianoulakis and Giljum.  She began her legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Jean C. Hamilton.  For six years, she taught Comparative Legal Ethics and Pretrial Practice and Procedure at the Washington University School of Law.  Ms. Allen received her undergraduate degree, an M.A. in comparative literature and her law degree from Washington University in St. Louis.  She is a member of various professional organizations including the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Association of Corporate Counsel.  Ms. Allen currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Judicial Learning Center.
